Te Rautaki Māori
In 2007 the first official Māori strategy for NZQA was launched. The strategic direction of Te Rautaki Māori a Te Mana Tohu Mātauranga 2007 – 2012 was Full Māori participation in a knowledge based society and economy.
Embedded in the strategy were long-term Māori aspirations represented by the following five themes:
- Māori potential
- Multiple pathways
- Quality markers
- Gains for Māori
- Māori futures.
Four implementation pathways with 16 key actions were established to ensure that the strategy influenced all aspects of NZQA’s business. A recent review has found that primarily the deliverables have been achieved. This is a significant accomplishment for NZQA.
The review highlighted how NZQA values its contribution and acknowledges its responsibilities to Māori and Māori learners. Since the launch of Te Rautaki Māori a Te Mana Tohu Mātauranga 2007 – 2012, NZQA has gained confidence in its ability to contribute to improved outcomes for Māori through its core functions.

Te Rautaki Māori ā te Mana Tohu Mātauranga 2012 – 2017
The next strategy, Te Rautaki Māori ā te Mana Tohu Mātauranga 2012 – 2017 will aim to outline NZQA’s contribution to the Government’s education sector goal of Māori achieving education success as Māori, and continue to build on the achievements of Te Rautaki Māori a Te Mana Tohu Mātauranga 2007 – 2012.
This next strategy will include some new focus areas but will also continue to build on the deliverables of the first by carrying through key themes which include contributing to improved Māori student achievement outcomes, implementing mātauranga Māori evaluative quality assurance, strengthening relationships and support for Māori expert groups and developing organisational culture and capability to engage effectively with Māori.
